Who can participate as a rider?
RIDERS must be a sworn law enforcement officer, active or retired. Immediate family members of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty (survivors) may also participate as a RIDER. All participants must be at least 18 years of age.
Who can particpate as a member of the SUPPORT TEAM?
SUPPORT TEAM members must be an active or retired law enforcement officer, an immediate family member of an active or retired law enforcement officer, survivor or sponsored by a current RIDER. All participants must be at least 18 years of age.
What are the dates of the 2011 Police Unity Tour?
It is highly recommended that you plan to arrive in Portsmouth, VA on Sunday, May 8, 2011. We will have a mandatorymeeting early on Monday, May 9. We actually begin riding on Tuesday, May 10th at 8:00 AM. We ride on May 10th, 11th, and 12th [In 2011 that's a Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday]. The NLEOMF's Annual Candlelight Vigil is on Friday, May 13, 2011. As a participant, you are required to attend this ceremony.
How much does it cost to participate?
All members are required to raise a minimum of $1800.00. Members must pay non-refundable $125 registration fee. $100 of that fee will be the first $100 towards your fundraising goal.
How do I get a Tour jacket and/or bicycle jersey?
RIDERS will be provided a jacket and jersey after sucessfully reaching their $1800 fundraising requirement.
Do I need to make hotel reservations?
No, we will make the hotel reservations and cover the hotel expenses for May 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th & 13th for RIDERS & SUPPORT TEAM members.
How far is the Route?
The whole ride is approximately 250 miles. The first day is about 110 miles; however, it is almost entirely flat. The next two days are about 70 miles each and consist of some rolling hills.
What is the pace?
You should train for or be comfortable riding 15-18 MPH. There are hills, don't forget hill training!
When do I need to arrive in Portsmouth?
There is a mandatory Orientation meeting the morning of May 9th, so it is recommended that you arrive May 8th.
There is no airport in Portsmouth, where do I fly into?
The closest airport is Norfolk International Airport, and it is roughly 20 minutes from our hotel.
How do I get from the airport to the hotel?
You are responsible for your own transportation arrangements.
When is the Candlelight Vigil?
The vigil is held the evening of May 13th, we will leave our hotel as a group in mid-afternoon on the 13th.
